CONCEPTUAL PROJECT B

BUNNY FRIEND PARK

PROPERTY OWNER - CITY OF NEW ORLEANS

ESTIMATED CONSTRUCTION COST - $5.2 M

ESTIMATED STORAGE VOLUME - 86,075 CF

Bunny Friend Park serves as both a central location and community gathering space. Building on the work of the Bunny Friend Neighborhood Association and Water Wise Gulf South, this project demonstrates green infrastructure and stormwater management strategies that could be replicated in parks across the city.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

  • Multi-use play fields: Large fields can store stormwater underground while remaining available for sports

  • New trees: Added tree canopy provides shade, captures rainfall, and absorbs water through root systems.

  • Bioretention ponds (rain gardens): Shallow landscaped depressions store runoff and support native plants while creating attractive park features.

  • Rainwater harvesting: Gutters and a rain barrel added to the concession stand capture roof runoff, reducing dripping during storms and providing water for landscape irrigation

A 10-year storm is approximately 8.5" over a 24 hour period.

Funding for this project is made possible through a grant by Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) Grant Program, managed by FEMA and administered through GOHSEP

Funding for the previous study was made possible with matching funds provided by National Academy of Science and Engineering Gulf of Mexico Research Program

The initial neighborhood study was a resident driven project led by Healthy Community Services, Water Wise Gulf South, and Bunny Friend Neighborhood Association. The data they gathered allowed them to pursue additional funding resulting in the project we are presenting today. Bringing these proposed projects to conceptual design with solid data to support them, including a Benefit Cost Analysis for each, is the next step in the implementation process.
